Chennai, a metro city on the brink of a water crisis and water sharing disputes on an annual basis is set to get 5 mini-desalination plants. The plants will carry a capacity to de-salinate 1 million litres each and will cater to approximately 5 lakh citizens.
The plants, costing Rs120 crore, will start operations at Kasimedu, Thiruvottiyur, Triplicane, MRC Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur within the next six months.
TOI also reported that the plants will be connected with nearby water distribution plants.
De-salination plants mark a major shift in the challenge to provide drinking water to all citizens by the government.
